The drafting workshop on the review of nutrient adequacy for Kenya School Meal Program was carried out between 27th and 30th of June 2022. The workshop objective was to draft a special paper on school meals program in Kenya. The specific objectives of the paper were to: Establish the nutrient adequacy of government-led school meals for children aged 6 – 14 years; Determine the minimum cost for a nutritious diet for children of aged 6 – 14 years and Estimate the cost for scale up of the nutritious school meal programme for children aged 6 -14 years in an expanded school meal programme.
The multi-stakeholder meeting had representatives from different international non governmental organizations, ministries and parastatals namely:
- Ministry of Education
- Save the Children
- Kenya National Bureau of Statistics
- Ministry of Health
- Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis
In the workshop, the team was able to develop several chapters of the policy paper such as the introduction, policy and program review highlighting the gaps and literature review. As next steps, the same team will continue meeting to discuss the preliminary results, analysis and discussions for policy recommendations.
